We were really excited this year when the announcement was made at church that they were doing a pancake breakfast in a nearby park....because in year's past, we had this as a tradition, but it stopped when we moved here to Colorado. A new independence day tradition has began...it wasn't planned and unofficially, we would end up at my cousin's house down the road watching them do a little fireworks display for us...I think it is partially due to the fact they live so close to us and that two years in a row the local fireworks show got canceled due to rain and with little ones we didn't want to go too far and had an earlier bed time routine. So, finally, we decided to make it official that every year on this holiday we would have a bbq together for dinner and after the sun sets we would sit in her yard and watch fireworks. So, we did that yet again this year. I really like this tradition because other holidays seem to be planned with other extended family or our own family traditions within the four walls of our home, so we hardly ever see the local ones. It's fun to watch my kids interacting with their cousins. We finally have reached a stage where we can let the kids stay up a little later and watch fireworks at the local golf club. The two girls huddled in daddy's lap plugging their ears and the baby cuddled up in my lap hugging me tightly. It's a nice family snuggle time on our quilt watching the lights flash in the sky, creating memories for the kids, and listening to their "oohs and ahhs"...and reflecting on our own memories in time's past! This holiday is special to us a couple because we started officially dating on this holiday....and we joke personally to each other that fireworks happen that night...using the double pun...but it all began on one fourth of JULY!!
